Establishment of PET-CT and Cyclotron:
Recently a state-of-art PET-CT has been established in NINMAS under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) ADP project, “Establishment of Positron Emission Tomography –Computed Tomography (PET-CT) with Cyclotron facilities”. The construction of the new building for the cyclotron facilities is going on in full swing. The procurement procedure for the cyclotron is under process and will be arriving in late 2016. Till then F-18 FDG (most important radiotracer for PET) is being procured from the only cyclotron centre (privately owned) in Bangladesh. At present regular oncological studies with F-18 FDG are being performed. Cancer is a serious health threat which is expected to double in Bangladesh in the next 10 to 20 years. Early detection of new cancer and its recurrence is facilitated by the improved diagnostic capability of PET-CT resulting in improved patient management and enhanced clinical outcome. Plans have been taken to start FDG cardiac studies for evaluation of myocardial viability. After establishment of in-house cyclotron, N13, O15, C11 and other short half-lived isotope studies would be possible. Since the commencement of PET-CT studies, a good number of patients have been benefited and resulted in reduction of numbers of patients going abroad for advanced medical management.
